Ouija Board

Have you ever played with an Ouija board? Do you know what happens when you play with one? An Ouija board is such a mystique and mysterious game. Ouija boards first started out as a parlor game in the mid-1800’s, when spiritism and channeling was at its height. The word “Ouija” comes from a mixture of German and French words for “yes”. Adolphus Theodore Wagner was the first one to patent it on January 23, 1854 and called it a “talking board”. Its purpose was to read the minds of people. In 1861, Allen Kardac, a Frenchman, described the board as an instrument to communicate with the spirit world. Later on it evolved from a mind reader to a portal of communication with the dead. In 1966, the Parker Brothers purchased the rights to the Ouija Board and moved its operations and facilities to Salem Massachusetts; and now is a registered trademark (allabouttheoccult.org). The things that happen when you play with an Ouija board are unknown. My guess is that people play with an Ouija board so they are able to talk to the dead. Someone might want to talk to it just as a joke or for play; or to merely talk to a spirit that they have been in contact with. To play with an Ouija board: you need one, two-four people and have an open mind. Some people consider it evil and bad. That it opens up doors for spirits to come through and will only make your house haunted. It has even been said to give power to the devil! Satan and his demons use the Ouija board to guide a person in a certain way. According to allabouttheoccult.org, this type of guidance will seem to be true, good, and helpful. They pretend to care about you and appear to be totally harmless. Satan and his demons do this so that a person gets more comfortable and deeply involved in spirits’ acts (allabouttheoccult.org). So the true question is whether or not an Ouija board is just a game or simply playing with evil.
You are able to buy Ouija boards at certain kinds of stores or you can make one. If one is bought or made, both kinds have to have certain things on it in order for it to work. Ouija boards now-a-days have everything on them that you need. But if you want to make one, then this is the best way to do so: By paralumun.com, you first cut up squares of paper. Second, you put the letters “A” through “Z”, the words yes and no, and the numbers 1 through 9 on the cut out pieces of paper. Third, you place the letters “A” to” Z” in a circle on the table or a flat, smooth piece that you are using as a board. Place “yes” next to the letter “A” at the top of the circle and “no” at the bottom of the circle. Next to the word “no” should be the numbers 1 to 9. Fourth, you will need something to slide across the table, a planchette. The best thing would be the bottom of a glass bottle. After you have everything set up, is when you actually start to play and begin another process.
To play, you first put the board on the knees of two to four people. Second, place your bottle bottom or whatever you have to signify the answer, on the table/board. You will want to wipe down the board/table so the mover can easily slide across it. Third, all the people participating will need to lightly rest their fingers on the mover. Fourth, is when you ask it a question and that’s when the real fun comes out. It could be quit startling at first and you might think that somebody else is moving it, but actually it’s working; so believe it! Time is needed for it to work and get going though. It might even take five minutes to get your first answer (DamnedGames.com). When asking it a question it is important that only one person asks it the initial question, but everyone needs to be concentrating on the question also. If you are not focused in on the question, your results will show. Also to get the most out of it, have a person that is not holding the board act as a scribe. Sometimes the letters are not spelled out correctly and they could be mixed around. So that person would then write the letters or numbers down and figure out what was trying to be said by the spirit. This could be done while the other people are playing and asking more questions. A tape recorder could also be used and be very useful because there could be noise that gets picked up by the recorder that can not from a naked ear. It is also better to play at night and have little amounts of light in the room. The time with the less amount of light would make it the best. A candle would be perfect and also set the mood in the process (DamnedGames.com). The responses you get from and Ouija board really depends on your attitude and commitment towards what you are doing.
So again, to successfully use an Ouija board you need an Ouija board or personal one. For a personal one you need the cut out squares of paper with letters, numbers, and the words “yes” and “no”. Also something to move around the board/table that is transparent, like the bottom of a glass bottle for example. The most important material you need is an open mind and a positive attitude towards what you are doing. According to paralumun.com, they say Ouija boards are not dangerous to use at all. The stories that are made from certain people are stupid and should be ignored. So the question still remains is an Ouija board just a game or simply playing with evil?

  1. Brandon: I liked the cretive topic choice. I want you focus on trying other techniques for you hook and topic sentences that aren't a cookie cutter. Also, you are citing your websites wrong. Check the handout I gave you. As far as the rubric goes, here's your grade:
Identifies purpose; targets an audience through most word choices and details
Presents and organizational pattern, though lapses may occur
Provides adequate support for main idea, but development may be uneven
Some sentence variety and good word choices; shows some mechanical errors
Format is missing the heading and your works cited should have a heading and title is Bibliography.

Total points: -7 for being late 70/100
    Bibliography: 20/30

  4. Brandon, I really like your topic. I can relate with your essay because I have played with a Ouija board before. I have to agree, that it really does work and isn't dangerous at all. I think next time you could maybe describe a personal experience with the game maybe. However, over all the essay was very informative. Also, try to use some different vocabulary too. Good job.
